What is the Madison Death STUDIO + bookshop?

  • Madison Death STUDIO + bookshop is a resource for individuals, caregivers, and families seeking support, information, and tools around death and grief. Whether you are navigating a recent loss, preparing for end-of-life, or looking to deepen your understanding of community based death care, MDC offers a place to begin.

The STUDIO + bookshop will be open on Wednesdays from 4-7pm and open by appointment starting in JUNE 2026, creating space for one-on-one consultations or quiet visits to the showroom. Schedule a time that works for you to receive guidance, explore available resources, or spend time with the shop and its offerings in a more personal, supported setting.

  • We offer creative and educational programming that centers death and grief literacy, ritual studies, and art-based practices that anyone with an interest in community based death care can attend. This includes writing workshops, hands-on classes, community salons, and small gatherings designed for reflection, connection, and collective meaning-making.

Together, these spaces help build shared language and understanding around death and dying, offering alternatives to isolation in times of grief and transition.

  • The MDC STUDIO is a space for practitioners building and deepening their practice in death, grief, and care work. Through creative and communal approaches, we bring together artists, caregivers, and facilitators to develop skills, share knowledge, and sustain this work in relationship with others.

This is a space to practice and explore what it means to live and work in honest relationship with death, dying, and grief, while building forms of care that are collaborative, grounded, and culturally responsive.

  • Our retail space is both a showroom and working studio, where MDC-designed items are developed alongside a carefully curated selection of goods that support death and grief work practices.

The shop features handmade ritual objects, artist-made work, creative and educational zines, and other thoughtfully crafted materials.

We carry tools for death workers — supporting care, ritual, and facilitation — while also offering community members accessible objects for grief, remembrance, and personal practice at home.

You can browse our online store, or come by and see it in person! The showroom is open by appointment, allowing for intentional visits to explore the space, engage with the materials, and find what is needed at your own pace.
